2017 Sikholars Conference at Stanford University
We are excited to announce the successful completion of another full year of Sikh Honors and Service Society (SHSS)! These are officially-registered high school clubs on various campuses in Yuba City, Sacramento, Elk Grove, Union City, Fremont, San Jose, Ceres, Livingston, Fresno, and Bakersfield. With nearly 500 members, they engage in community service, Sikh learning opportunities, collegiate assistance, mentoring, and social opportunities. Here are some highlights from the year:
Stockdale High School (Bakersfield) SHSS created a venue called “Strength Not Fear: A Forum of Solidarity” with their Muslim and black peers
Livingston High School featured in local newspapers for their Know Your Neighbors Initiative that goes into some of the region’s poorest communities to share pizza in the spirit of Baba Nanak,
James Logan High (Union City) SHSS created continuous opportunities for youth to engage such as hikes and beach cleanups!
We hope you celebrate the Sikh youth and encourage their continuous growth as well. This summer we host our annual SHSS officers retreat. We are able to keep the event free for nearly 50 officers due to the generous sangat that believes in engaging our high school youth. If this project excites you, donate generously here.
Planning has long been underway for Bhujangan 2017. While in the past we held multiple retreats, this year we bring all the Kaurs together for a single camp. There is no other camp like this in the world – one that is inclusive of all and celebrates Kaurs to be themselves. We still need over $2500 to reach our annual fundraising goal, make a contribution today!
We thank you for your generosity and support of the Jakara Movement. Only with your support can The Jakara Movement take the passion and creativity of thousands and channel it into real, tangible change for the future of Sikh youth!
